Emory University

International Applicants

An "international applicant" is any applicant who is neither a citizen nor a permanent resident of the United States.  Where you live or study now does not matter.

If you are an international applicant, please read the information below about your application and about some steps you will need to take if you are admitted and choose to come to Emory.

Application

1.  English Proficiency

If your native language is not English, you must show evidence of command of the English language.  To determine what you need to do, contact the program you are applying to.  Generally, programs require the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or an evaluation of a writing sample.

2.  Translated and Notarized Transcripts

Transcripts that are not in English must be translated and notarized.  Please scan both the original and the translated versions, and submit them together as one file using the online application.

If you are admitted and choose to come to Emory,

then you will need to do the items below.  You DO NOT need to do these when you apply.  This is for your information only.

1.  Complete a Financial Certificate

Before the university will issue documents in support of visas, international students must demonstrate their ability to cover the full cost of educational and living expenses, either from personal resources or from a combination of personal resources and financial awards, including tuition scholarships and fellowships from the Laney Graduate School.  (Usually, doctoral students are able to demonstrate their ability to cover the full cost entirely or almost entirely through support awarded by the Laney Graduate School or other funders.)  The certificate and instructions for completing it are here:

2.  Obtain a Visa

If you are admitted, you will need to obtain a visa.  Contact a U.S. consulate in your country for details on the visa application process.

Most international graduate students enter under F-1 or J-1 visas.  You will need either an I-20 form (to obtain an F-1 visa) or a DS2019 form (to obtain a J-1 visa).  The Laney Graduate School and your program will handle these forms for you.

3.  Participate in English Language Support Program testing

The Laney Graduate School has a well developed ELSP program that provides extensive support.

All admitted students whose first language is not English must participate in an assessment administered by ELSP.

4. If you are a transfer student, have your immigration record transferred electronically through SEVIS to Emory University.

If you are studying at another university in the U.S. and will be transferring to Emory, you will need to follow a special set of procedures and use a special form.  You'll find instructions on this website.

Emory's International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) provides a wide range of support and assistance for international students, including an orientation before the start of fall semester each year.
